ISO 14001:2004 -  Certificate of Approval

Tuticorin Port Trust has the proud record of adhering to international standards of infrastructure and operation. It was the first major port in India to implement a Quality Management System when the concept of International Standards Organisation was new in the industrial and service sectors, notably in the Port sector. Its efforts were rewarded in 1996 when accreditation to the then ISO 9002:1994 Standard.

2. The Quality Management System practised in the Port assiduously since 1996 has helped in orientation of its procedures, processes and policies towards meeting the twin objectives of streamlining its functioning to achieve the organisational objectives and optimising customer satisfaction. When the old ISO 9002:1994 standard was replaced by ISO 9001:2000 standard, Tuticorin Port was certified as adhering to the revised standard in April, 2003 with the Quality Policy - "To ensure customer satisfaction through continual improvement of facilities and services for maritime trade at optimum cost". Since then customer satisfaction, continual improvement and cost optimisation have been the corner stones of the Port’s functioning.

3. The Port as part of its commitment to fulfil its obligations to the Society on Environmental Management decided, in July, 2003 to adopt an Environmental System based on ISO 14001. Its Environmental Policy under ISO 14001:2004 conveys its commitment to introduce and continually improve an efficient and sustainable Environmental System conforming to legal requirement, promoting maritime trade with sustainable pollution control and reduction of waste and creation of environmental awareness in the Port community. Unlike the QMS which is internal to the Port, the EMS demands full and active involvement of all the members of the Port Community viz., employees, port users, vendors, customers and other stakeholders.

4. Accordingly, the Environmental Management System of Tuticorin Port Trust has been assessed and approved in accordance with the requirements of ISO 14001:2004 with respect to the following scope: "Providing Seaport Facilities and Related Support Services for Sea borne Transportation at Zone – A of Tuticorin Port Trust". The assessment was made by Indian Register of Quality Systems and the certificate was issued on 16th September, 2005. The certificate is valid up to 30.08.2008 subject to surveillance audit every year by them and thereafter it will be renewed every three years subject to continued satisfactory maintenance of the EMS.
