The container handling operations in Tuticorin Port commenced during 1979-80 with a modest beginning of 121 containers, during the year the growth of container traffic was phenomenal, over a period of 20 years, the total container traffic per annum has crossed two lakh TEUS with the Quay Gantry crane method.
