The Port of Tuticorin is located in the Gulf of Mannar 540 KMS Southwest of Chennai in the State of Tamil Nadu and 140 Nautical Miles from Colombo, Sri Lanka. Longitude 78º 13' East on the East coast of India. Latitude- 8º 45' North. The Port is also strategically located close to the East – West international sea route. The Port of Tuticorin, an all weather Port in Tamilnadu, protected by two Rubble Mound Break Waters and sheltered from the fury of storms and cyclonic winds, is strategically identified for promotion of tourism. Blessed with historical heritage and places of tourist attraction in its hinterland, Tuticorin Port could act as a catalyst for tourism industry. The location of Tuticorin enables to reach any tourist spot within hours. Package tours covering important places in Tuticorin and boarding at another West Coast Port is also being processed. Tuticorin Port being the closest Indian Port to the Port of Colombo, it is expected that the Cruise vessels calling at Colombo would consider calling at Tuticorin Port also. The Ministry of Shipping has included Tuticorin Port in the Western circuit of cruise service alongwith Mumbai, Goa, New Mangalore and Kochi for the growth of tourism. |
